KNEE LIGAMENT RECONSTRUCTION

KNEE LIGAMENT
RECONSTRUCTION AT GUSTAVEL ORTHOPEDICS

Ligaments provide support and regulate movement in the knee joints. Sometimes, the connective tissue and ligaments inside the knee are injured. Most ligament injuries occur in sports, though they can also occur during falls or due to brute force. Limitation in your knee's movement is a clear indication that you have a knee condition, and you should make an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon.

When Is Knee Ligament Reconstruction Recommended?

After a physical assessment and test, an orthopedist will recommend a treatment plan. Knee ligament reconstruction is recommended when you have any of the following conditions:

Stretched or Torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL): Generally occurs due to sudden twisting motion.

Injured Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL): Results from sudden, direct impact to the back of your knee.

Stretched or Torn Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL): This can happen when there is a blow to the knee during high-velocity sports like hockey.

What Happens During Knee Ligament Reconstruction?

An orthopedic surgeon performs Knee Ligament Reconstruction surgery under general anesthesia and sometimes under spinal anesthesia, depending on your injury's degree.

  • To begin, you'll change into a gown, and an IV will be administered.
  • Then, you'll be positioned on the operating table.
  • The anesthesiologist will monitor your vitals.
  • The skin in the area covering the injury will be sterilized.
  • Your orthopedic surgeon will make small incisions in the knee area and inserts an arthroscope.
  • The orthopedist will create tiny holes in the tibia and femur, where previous torn ligaments had been attached.
  • Grafted Patellar Tendon will be threaded through the holes and fastened with surgical staples.
  • The surgeon will close the incisions.
  • A sterile bandage will cover the site of your knee arthroscopy.

Recovery Process After Knee Ligament Reconstruction

Once your knee ligament reconstruction is complete, you'll move to the recovery room for observation. When the anesthesia wears off and your vitals are stable, you can be discharged or given a hospital room. You may have to use crutches if you are on an inpatient program.

It is up to you to keep the incision area sterile when at home. You might experience some pain, for which you can take pain-relieving medication. Ice your knee and elevate it to reduce swelling. After the wound has healed, you can begin physical therapy as recommended by your orthopedic surgeon.
