Risk factors & symptoms of shoulder impingement syndrom

Risk Factors & Symptoms

Risk factors for developing impingement syndrome include repetitive overhead activities such as construction work, painting, lifting, and overhead sporting activities. Bony abnormalities can be contributing factors as well.

Symptoms include pain in the front of the shoulder that can often radiate to the elbow, pain with overhead activity or lifting. Some patients will even experience pain at rest. Other symptoms that can develop as the problem worsens include loss of strength, reduced range of motion, pain reaching behind the back and pain at night.

Physical exam and a good history can usually confirm the diagnosis. Sometimes x-ray, MRI or ultrasound is used to rule out any other shoulder pathology.

Non-Surgical Treatment

Non-surgical treatment can include rest, NSAIDS, and PT. If patients continue to experience pain despite initial conservative treatment, cortisone or other biologic options may help to relieve the pain.

Failure of conservative treatment often leads to a shoulder arthroscopy. The inflamed bursa is resected and a portion of the undersurface of the acriomion bone is removed in order to make more room for the rotator cuff. Other areas of the shoulder are also evaluated during the arthroscopy such as the AC joint, the labrum, the rotator cuff and the biceps tendon.

You will be in a sling for a few days following the procedure. Physical therapy is recommended to help regain strength and range of motion. Most patients are able to return to normal activities in 8-12 weeks.
