KNEE CONDITIONS: KNEECAP DISLOCATION

KNEECAP DISLOCATION
AT GUSTAVEL ORTHOPEDICS

A kneecap dislocation or patellar sublimation occurs when there is a sudden twisting of the knee. The patella does not hold within its groove or swing from one side to the other, leading to the knee problem. Those with weak knee joints are prone to such conditions at any time of their life. Other individuals at risk for kneecap dislocation are teenagers and athletes due to their activity level.

Symptoms of Kneecap Dislocation

The symptoms indicative of a kneecap dislocation includes:

  • Painful swelling around the knee
  • A sharp pain that occurs when pressure is applied directly on the knee joint, primarily upon standing
  • Experiencing pain when applying pressure to the patella
  • Feeling discomfort when walking
  • Sloppy movement of the patella, typically sideways

Diagnosis of Kneecap Dislocation

Kneecap dislocation can be diagnosed by an orthopedic physician who will perform a physical examination of the knee cap to establish the injury's extent and the accompanying level of pain. They may also deploy further investigation via x-rays and MRIs to search for additional damages or fractures around that area. A diagnosis assesses the magnitude and type of dislocation to inform the kind of treatment to prescribe.

Treatment Options for Kneecap Dislocation

Using Braces to Stabilize the Patella

Initially, your orthopedic doctor will recommend that you take painkillers such as naproxen and analgesics to reduce the pain and swelling caused by your kneecap dislocation. Next, they will address realigning the patella. Your doctor may reinforce its position by immobilizing it for about three to six weeks using braces to hold it in place. This allows the ligaments time to heal.

Physical Therapy

When it's time to remove the braces from your kneecap, physical therapy may be recommended to strengthen the joint muscles. Specialized exercises are essential to stabilize the patella and aid in the knee's movement without reinjury. If there is excess fluid in the patella joint, your orthopedist may remove it through a joint aspiration to minimize infection risk if the knee has an open wound.

Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction Surgery

If the knee injury involves a torn ligament, an orthopedic surgeon will rectify it. Surgery is also necessary on kneecaps that have been dislocated in the past as it means that the patella tissues are weak or detached. This occurs through a procedure known as the medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction.

Surgery is advisable if the kneecap moves out of the groove excessively as it puts a lot of pressure on the cartilage. It involves a lateral release approach where the tight ligaments are cut to get the kneecap back to its position.
